The Town of Ashland represents the transition in Hanover County from the rural western section to a more suburban eastern half.

Hanover County is the only of the three major counties in the RVA Metro that does not border the City of Richmond. Hanover is located north of Henrico and is more rural than both Chesterfield and Henrico, especially in the western half. Montpellier, Ashland, Beaverdam, Atlee and Mechanicsville are common names for areas within the county. Mechanicsville and Atlee are the more suburban feeling areas within the county with other areas having a more rural feel. The county is bisected by Interstate 95 with Interstate 295 running along its entire southern border with Henrico.
